Coyotes in LA: How to Keep Your Dog Safe
If you live near the hills, you've seen them — or your neighbors have. Coyotes are a normal part of life in Los Angeles, and most of the time they want nothing to do with you. But small dogs are a different story, especially at dawn and dusk. 5 rules that actually work: Keep your dog on a leash no longer than 6 feet — that's LA County law, and it's your best protection. Skip dawn and dusk walks near canyons and hillsides when you can. Never leave a small dog alone in the yard, even a fenced one — coyotes can clear most fences. If you see one: pick up a small dog, stand tall, make noise, and back away slowly. Don't run. Remove attractants: no pet food outside, secure trash bins, pick up fallen fruit.
