Don't Buy This Leash: The Rope Lead That Can Burn Your Hands and Lose Your Dog It looks cute. It's cheap, it's colorful, it says "climbing rope" on the tag. Dog walkers all over LA use them. And honestly? For puppies and for medium and large dogs, it's one of the worst purchases you can make. Here's why. 1. It will tear up your hands. A thin cord plus a lunging dog equals rope burn. When a 50-pound dog bolts after a squirrel, that rope slides through your palm like a saw — skin gone in a second. And in that second, you let go. Everyone does. It's a reflex. 2. You physically can't hold a strong dog with a cord. There's nothing to grip. A wide flat leash spreads the force across your hand; an 8–10mm cord concentrates all of it into your fingers. If your dog pulls hard, you don't lose the argument — you lose the leash. That's how dogs end up loose on busy LA streets. 3. Slip leads choke — with no limit. This style tightens around the neck as far as the dog pulls. For puppies, whose necks and tracheas are still developing, that's a real injury risk. For pullers of any size, it means constant pressure on the throat instead of actual control. 4. Puppies destroy them. See the chewed-up grips in the photo? A puppy will shred a rope lead in one car ride. Then you're standing in a parking lot holding a piece of string. What to buy instead: A wide flat leash (1 inch) with a padded handle — for medium and large dogs A properly fitted harness — for puppies and pullers; control without choking A leash with a traffic handle (the short second handle near the collar) — gold for city crossings The bottom line: the leash is the only physical connection between you and your dog. Save money on toys. Don't save it on the thing that keeps your dog safe on a Los Angeles street.
